Spring Forward, Fall Backward, Hurricane Season... Online Backup!
BackupCritic, a vendor-neutral website devoted to Windows backups, encourages readers to use hurricane season to remember to create/update their online backup regimen.
October 14, 2004 -- Backup Critic, a vendor-neutral informational website devoted to Windows backups, is telling readers to use hurricane season to remember to start or update their online backup regimen. Some clever person thought of using the Daylight Savings Time clock change to remember to check smoke alarm batteries. Just like that task, online backup is something most people (especially home computer users) would deem a good thing, but might never get around to. Hurricane season is an excellent reminder that, even if you perform regular backups, if you don't store a copy somewhere far from your house, then you still risk losing all your data.
Backup Critic editor Ron Burk says "We go into detail on the various disasters that can take out your home computer along with any local backups -- hurricanes are far from the only hazard that makes online backups worthwhile." He adds, "Home users who can't or don't want to pay extra for an online data backup service can probably accomplish much the same thing by using their ISP's free 'web storage' to store a backup copy a reasonable distance away.
